Volunteer Opportunities
The Montgomery County Extension 4-H Program offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for adult residents of our county. All volunteers who will work directly with youth are screened, oriented and supervised by MCE. All volunteers have job descriptions and regular training opportunities available. Volunteer roles can be short term or long term and are open to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, religion, national origin, or disability.
* Examples of long term volunteer roles:
- Club organizational leaders - (Most clubs meet monthly year-round) Most clubs are community based, subject matter based, or audience based. Community clubs meet in a specific community, area, subdivision or housing complex. Subject matter clubs can include various animal clubs (dog clubs, pet clubs, horse clubs, etc), natural resource clubs (fishing club, target shooting club, recycling club, etc), family science clubs (fashion club, nutrition club, etc), mechanical science clubs (bike club, small engine club), and others (cultural exchange club, creative writing club, etc.). Audience based clubs might include a teen group, a home schooled club or a club for younsters with special needs.
- Site managers - Adventure in Science Clubs meet weekly from mid October to mid March at various local science facilities. Volunteers are needed to organize the weekly programs at each site, oversee the use of equipment, and guide the participants towards completion at the Parents Day program.
* Examples of shorter term volunteer roles:
- Project Leaders - Volunteers are always needed to teach workshops or short-term class series in such area as small engine safety, sewing, cake decorating, public speaking, insect collection, and other topics.
- AIS Instructors - Volunteers are needed who can teach a one to two hour ‘hands on’ science class on Saturday mornings in such topics as biological science, physical science, bridge building, “inside a hurricane†weather project, astronomy, etc.
- Camp Instructors - Volunteers are needed to teach classes at our Montgomery County 4-H Camp in Western Maryland for one week each July. Classes might include crafts, canoeing, campfire nutrition, nature hiking, understanding wildlife, etc.
- Activity Leaders - Volunteers are always needed to help organize events and activities for youth such as public speaking contests, bicycle rodeos, sewing schools, camp-outs, etc. These volunteers help with room set-up, contacting judges, arranging recognition, and other duties.
- Volunteers are also used to assemble newsletters and to do specific clerical work during busy seasons of the 4-H year.
* Examples of one-time volunteer roles:
- Judges - 4-H can always use volunteers to serve as officials at public speaking events, at the County Fair, at record book judging activities, and many other events. Fair judges might include volunteers who will judge baked goods, posters, clothing, woodworking and other project areas.
