In 1989, the Maryland Department of Agriculture and the Cooperative Extension Service developed the Nutrient Management program. The purpose of the program is to reduce nutrient loadings, chiefly nitrogen and phosphorus, that pose a threat to the Chesapeake Bay. The efforts are aimed at educating and helping farmers manage crop nutrients more efficiently. Over 140 Frederick County farmers developed new or upgraded plans for over 32,000 acres. The Frederick County Nutrient Management Program has collected 85 soil samples and 26 manure samples. The Pre-Sidedress Nitrogen Test (PSNT) helps farmers determine if additional nitrogen needs to be added to corn crops. Almost 800 acres of fields were tested with PSNT. The PSNT resulted in saving 23,945 pounds of nitrogen in one year. For more information on the Frederick County Nutrient Management Program, contact Patty Burdette 301-600-3571 or email
