The University of Maryland Extension Master Gardener Program trains volunteer horticultural educators to support the University of Maryland Extension mission by educating residents about safe, effective, and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes, and communities. Volunteers receive 40 hours of classroom, hands-on, and virtual instruction in their county of residence so that they can then teach community members through workshops, presentations, demonstrations, and more.
Master Gardeners help the University of Maryland Extension solve gardening problems and teach environmentally sound practices by
- working in information booths at community events and fairs,
- maintaining demonstration gardens,
- answering garden questions at plant clinics,
- teaching horticulture to beginning gardeners and youth, and
- using special talents, such as writing and photography, to benefit the program.
How Are Master Gardeners Trained?
The University of Maryland Extension conducts Master Gardener training classes annually through an e-training program. Participants learn many horticultural subjects from specialists, educators, and other horticulture professionals.

What Does Master Gardener Training Cost?
Basic training courses cost $200 for the basic training courses and include the Master Gardener Handbook.
