4-H Youth Development in Somerset County

4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization, empowering young people to lead, learn, and serve. The University of Maryland Extension’s 4-H program helps youth ages 5-18 reach their fullest potential through research-backed, hands-on learning experiences that build life skills, leadership, confidence, and meaningful connections to their communities. Maryland 4-H programs vary by county and may be offered through clubs, camps, after-school programs, fairs, school partnerships, and community organizations. 

In Somerset County, youth participate in 4-H through volunteer-led clubs, school and after-school programs, and community events. 4-H clubs serve youth ages 8-18 throughout the county, and clover clubs serve children ages 5-7. 4-H'ers learn life skills through a variety of 4-H project areas, including shooting sports, animal science, nutrition, home arts, aerospace, agriscience, robotics, photography, woodworking, and more. 4-H Member & Volunteer Enrollment

Member Enrollment - New 4-H families should go to 4honline.com, create a family profile, and then add and enroll the new 4-H members.

Volunteer Enrollment - Contact the Extension Office to talk with our 4-H educator or program assistant about volunteer opportunities. After speaking with 4-H staff, adults who want to become 4-H volunteers apply online and complete a background check and a brief orientation.

4-H Clubs

Join Somerset County 4-H and follow your interests, be involved in projects, and learn new things! From traditional clubs to 6-week mini clubs and workshops, Somerset 4-H clubs offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities for youth ages 8 to 18. If you are interested in joining, please contact the Somerset County Extension office at 410-651-1350. 

Somerset 4-H Traditional Clubs
  • Veterinary Science Club:  Investigate basic anatomy, body systems, functions, and general knowledge of veterinary medicine.  Interact with local clinics and perform dissections. 
  • Livestock Club:  Show your animal at the fair!  Learn showmanship, grooming, and handling techniques.
  • Diamondbacks Club: Propose activities based on your own interests
  • STEM Club: STEM stuff each month
  • Robotics Club: FIRST LEGO League
