Since the 1960s, the New World Screwworm (NWS) has been declared eradicated from the United States although there was still a large population in Mexico and Central America. Depending on the winds and weather, we could still see the pest show up here in the US, mainly in Texas and Florida. Recently, there has been a resurgence of the Screwworm in Mexico which led to the closure of livestock trade through the U.S. Southern Border Ports from May 11 to September 15, 2025.

Aphid populations outbreak very quickly and should be regularly scouted. Four aphid species are commonly found in Maryland and Delaware small grains and their economic impact varies. Therefore, it is also important to determine which species you are finding. In the fall, greenbugs are of most concern for direct damage to small grains, whereas in the spring English grain aphids are of most concern.

Mid-Summer Insect Scouting Priorities in Row Crops

Crapemrytle bark scale was first confirmed in Maryland in April 2020 by the Maryland Department of Agriculture. It was later found in Frederick and Carroll Counties. Monitor crape myrtles closely for this pest to limit the spread of the scale insect.

As soybean planting begins in Maryland, farmers should monitor early-season pests that can affect stand establishment and yield.
